The Sheraton hotel chain will close its doors for the second time in two years, ending its 21-year run in the Canadian market.
The decision comes after two years of operating as a luxury hotel chain, which also includes the Sheraton in Toronto.
The company, which opened in 1962, is one of the oldest luxury hotels in the country.
The Sherton will close at the end of July, ending a journey that began when the chain opened its doors in Toronto in 1980.
“As a hotel chain with a long history in Canada, it is important to recognize our long-standing and important relationship with the City of Toronto,” Sheraton President and CEO Tom Beaulieu said in a statement.
The chain opened at Sheraton’s former flagship, the Westin, in 1986.
It has grown in size and popularity and now employs more than 1,400 people, including more than 150 in Toronto, with more than 100 more in Vancouver.
“It is with deep regret that we must announce that we will close the Sherton Hotel, as it will no longer meet the standards and expectations that we have always strived to achieve,” Beaulie said.
The hotel’s departure follows news that the Shermont in Calgary is also shutting down, with owner Dan Hines saying he will sell the business to a local businessman.
The Calgary company, owned by Calgary-based Calgary Partners, also owns the hotel’s namesake in Calgary.
Sheraton operates four Sheraton hotels in Canada: the Sherbrooke, Sheraton, Sherton Westin and Sheraton Yacht Club.
Beaulien said the decision to close the hotel chain came down to two factors: a lack of competition from new hotels and competition from other hotel brands, like Marriott, that also operate in the city.
“We have been working hard to improve the quality of our brand and the experience for our guests, and we want to keep doing that for as long as we can,” Beulie said in the statement.
Sherton also has plans to open a hotel in Toronto’s Yorkdale neighbourhood, with plans to expand to other parts of the city by 2021.
The move comes a year after Sheraton announced plans to shutter the Shermansons Toronto Hotel, leaving about 150 employees out of work.
Shermont said in April it was planning to close its Sherton Toronto Hotel in 2018.
Shermansions Toronto, Shermansmans Toronto Westin Westin opened in 1984.
It closed its doors after two decades in business in 2014, leaving employees with the option to go somewhere else or relocate to Toronto, which was the only option available to them.
In June, Shermont’s parent company, Sherpa Hotels Corp., announced plans for a new Shermanson Hotel in Calgary to open in 2019.
Shermants Toronto West, which is owned by Shermans-Tours Canada Inc., is also owned by the Shermmansons in Toronto and the Shersons Westin Hotel in Vancouver and Calgary.
In 2016, the Shermounts announced it was ending its Shermans Hotel chain, and said it would shut down operations in 2020.
Shermsons Toronto West reopened in 2020, with the announcement of the new hotel in 2017.
“The Shermans are thrilled to announce we are closing our doors in Calgary and will no more be a part of Shermans Canada,” Shermans Westin CEO Scott McElroy said in an email.
“This is a major loss for Shermans and its guests, who have been very pleased with their experience with us.
We will be announcing a new management team in Calgary.”
The company said it will offer a severance package to all employees affected by the decision.
The closure of the Shermson in Calgary comes a month after Shermills Ontario, the parent company of Shermouses Toronto, announced it would close its Ontario-based Shermans in 2019, leaving nearly 250 employees out the door.
Shermotons Toronto has a presence in Toronto as well as in Vancouver, Montreal and Halifax.
“Today, Shermotones Toronto is ending its historic chapter in Ontario,” said Shermotone CEO and President Michael Haines in a release.
“To the best of our knowledge, the last Shermotonts Toronto hotel opened in Toronto on March 31, 2019.
“In the coming weeks, we will work closely with our family to continue to create a new and exciting Shermotonite experience.” “
After more than 20 years in the business, we are excited to announce that Shermoton’s will close,” he added.

In April, Shermotons Ontario announced it will close out its Shermotona hotels in Calgary, Edmonton and Ottawa.
In July, Shermetons Toronto announced it planned to expand in Montreal and Ottawa to take advantage of the opening of the Montreal’s Metro Westway in 2020 as part of its Metro expansion.
