Dallas, Texas — A group of hotel owners and operators says hotel suites are more expensive than they used to be.
They say the cost of living is higher than it has been in a long time.
The owners and leaders of the Dallas Downtown Hotel Association released their quarterly report Monday saying the average hotel suite is $1,100 more than it was 10 years ago.
The average suite at some hotels is $3,000 more than they were 10 years earlier.
The downtown Dallas hotel group is part of the Greater Dallas Association of Realtors, which represents hoteliers.
The group says the average monthly rate for hotel rooms in Dallas has increased by 20% over the past five years.
The group says hotel occupancy rates have increased by 15% and average monthly room rates have grown by 35%.
The group also says Dallas Downtown’s average monthly hotel room rate has increased about 5% over those same five years and that Dallas Downtown is the most affordable city in the country for hotel room rentals.
The report comes as hotel owners are struggling with a $10 billion in debt.
The report says the hotel industry has lost more than $7 billion in the past two years.
Dallas Downtown says hotel owners have been forced to cut staff and lay off workers.
The downtown hotel association says its members are working hard to increase hotel occupancy levels.
The association says there are 1.5 million hotel rooms across the city.
