When a cat or dog is a walker, you might think its just an extension of your own personality, but for a pet who lives for the city, that can be a challenge.
New York City’s public transportation system is a mix of cars and bicycles, which means it’s a perfect place for pets to get their feet wet.
In fact, it is so good for pets that it’s been dubbed the “walk-on-a-bike capital of the world.”
While it is true that the city has been an economic powerhouse for decades, pets aren’t the only ones who enjoy riding the rails.
New Yorkers are a big fans of cats.
In 2014, a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that cats make up more than one-third of all New York city residents.
That’s one reason why the city is known for its dog-friendly streets.
And cats aren’t just for the cats.
They’re also for the dog-loving New Yorkers, who make up roughly one-quarter of the city’s population.
“If you live in New York and you love cats, you can be happy,” said Laura W. O’Neill, the Executive Director of Cats New York.
O”ll be the first to admit that we are the pet capital of America,” said O’Neil.
The New York metro area has over 30,000 pet-friendly businesses and over 100,000 residents.
The city also has some of the most active pet-share programs in the country, with more than 300,000 cats living in the city.
But it’s not just New Yorkers who love their cats.
Pet owners in the state of California are also passionate about their pets.
PetSmart California, a pet-care chain based in Riverside, has more than 12,000 employees and is ranked as the sixth largest employer in the U.S. by Forbes.
Pet owner, Kristy McNeil, said her cats have become a major part of her family life.
“I have two cats that I have been caring for and that I love,” she said.
“They are so much fun and they are so energetic.”
McNeil said she recently learned that her dogs had been vaccinated against rabies.
“So when I came home, my cat was already in the car seat and they were all vaccinated, I was like, ‘Holy crap, these are the best dogs I’ve ever seen,'” she said, adding that she and her husband have been looking forward to her pets being on the road ever since.
“My cats have been very supportive of me and my husband when we’re out there,” she added.
“It’s very hard to get out there and spend a lot of time with a cat when you don’t know him.”
McNeil has two cats now that have become part of the family.
She has two dogs, Bella and Rosie, and one cat, Rosie the dog.
They are a mix between a cat and a dog.
Rosie is about 8 years old, and she has become very protective of her older sister, who is about 6.
“We had a little dog that we had to put down when she got sick,” she explained.
“She is very protective and loves her sisters.”
The family had Rosie with them for about a month when Rosie was diagnosed with rabies in May of 2018.
She became ill the next day and had to be euthanized the following day.
“There were no vet bills, no vet fees, nothing,” McNeil explained.
McNeill’s cats are also the inspiration for the new book called Catwalk, written by a California cat-loving couple, Karen and Bill Miller.
It is a true story of a couple who went from loving cats to spending millions of dollars to purchase a beautiful pet farm in California, but ultimately, they found their way to New York after spending more than $10 million on a new home for Rosie.
“Rosie has been a huge part of my life,” McNeill said.
While there are many cats in New Yorks pet-sharing programs, McNeil and Miller said they found the perfect mix of love for their animals.
“With the cat, I think we’re really lucky because we have a very special bond with our cat, which I think makes it really special,” said McNeil.
“A lot of people in the community have had cats that they’ve gotten so attached to that they couldn’t let go.”
The couple hopes the book will help spread the word about the benefits of pet ownership.
“Hopefully, this will be a great resource for people that want to get a little bit of that animal connection,” McNeal said.
The book has already been picked up by major publications, including USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and The New Yorker.
The couple said they hope to keep the book coming out.
“As far as we’re concerned, cats are our life,” Miller said
